There were a lot of big matches and developments on the hardwood floor this week and I’m not talking about football teams holding indoor practices. Here’s a look at some of the biggest volleyball matches of the past week:
- Harvard-Westlake, ranked No. 2 in the Division I-A coaches’ poll, clinched at least a share of the Mission League title with a five-game victory over No. 3 Sacred Heart on Thursday. Sophomore OH Megan Norton finished with 24 kills and Cathryn Quinn, who committed to Princeton last week, added 15 kills and seven blocks. According to the Daily News, it was the Wolverines’ first victory on Sacred Heart soil since 2002. Harvard-Westlake can clinch the title outright with a victory over Chaminade on Tuesday.
- At the beginning of Marmonte League play, I didn’t know if Westlake or Royal would finish second behind Thousand Oaks. Well, with Westlake’s five-game victory over Moorpark on Thursday, the Warriors seem to have second place wrapped up. Michelle Ketter had 23 kills and teammate Michelle Osinski contributed 27 digs in the win.
- With a four-game triumph Thursday over Brentwood, ranked No. 2 in Div. III-A, No. 4 Village Christian not only avenged getting swept by the Eagles a few weeks ago, but also took sole possession of first place in the Olympic League. OH Rachel Taylor had 21 kills in the win.
- Quartz Hill defeated Antelope Valley in four games Thursday to clinch its second Golden League title in three years.
- Oak Park, the top-ranked team in Div. III-AA, clinched at least a share of the Tri-Valley League title on Thursday by sweeping St. Bonaventure. No. 3 Oaks Christian also swept its opponent, Grace Brethren on Thursday and must win its final two matches against Nordhoff and Oak Park to grab a share of the title.
