CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The St. Patrick’s Day Parade Society on Thursday called off plans to turn the Cedar River green during the group’s 10th anniversary celebration on March 17.
The society did not exactly have the luck of the Irish when the Iowa Department of Water, Air and Waste Management learned of the plans. A department spokesman said that dumping green food coloring into the river might harm aquatic life. “The thought of polluting the river never occurred to us,” Jim Hynes, the society’s deputy parade marshal, said.
