HAMBURG, West Germany — Three Polish men were freed after eight days in a shipping container and have asked for political asylum in West Germany, Hamburg police said Friday.
The three told police they had crawled into the container Feb. 27, before Polish customs officials sealed it at the Gdynia docks for transport on the freighter Adam Michiewicz to Hamburg.
Police said the men had taken only their passports and a small amount of food into the container.
On Wednesday, Hamburg dock workers heard the men pounding on the inside of the container and let them out, police said. The identities of the men were not released.
