Manville Corp. reported a $98.5-million loss for the 1985 third quarter after taking a special charge against earnings. For the quarter, the Denver-based company’s total revenue was $515.7 million, compared to $511.9 million in the third quarter of last year. A year earlier, Manville posted a profit of $28.2 million for the quarter. This year’s loss was the result of a $788-million capital-spending program planned for the next five years and an estimated $180-million pretax charge against third-quarter earnings, the company said. The $180-million charge was caused by the sale or shutdown of several Manville operations and anticipated asbestos workers compensation claims and asbestos property cleanup charges.
