Player: Gary Wellman School: Westlake
Positions: Running back / Defensive back
Class: Senior Size: 5-9, 165
Last Week: In Westlake’s 42-22 Marmonte League win over Camarillo, Wellman had a hand in all of the Warriors’ touchdowns. Of his nine carries, five resulted in touchdowns. He had scoring runs of 50, 77, 13, 6 and 25 yards. He also threw a 23-yard pass to Todd Thompson for the game’s first touchdown. Wellman finished the game with 169 yards rushing.
Season: In seven games, Wellman has 21 touchdowns. He has accounted for 1,159 yards in total offense, scoring every 4.4 times he touches the ball. The senior already holds 18 school records.
Coach’s Comment: “He’s caught the ball well, which has been a big plus for our passing game,” said Coach George Contreras. “Also, one thing he does well that you don’t usually see is that he’s an outstanding blocker.”
Other Candidates: Patrick Hardy (Kennedy) ran 235 yards on 38 carries for two touchdowns. Jang Kim (Chaminade) ran 171 yards on 27 carries and scored a touchdown. Kim also kicked two field goals and an extra point.
