Robert Erlacher of Italy won the men’s giant slalom race in the ski World Series at Sestriere, Italy, despite a protest firm Swiss officials who claimed he missed the next-to-last gate on his second run.

Erlacher, second after the morning run of the two-heat race on the Kandahar course, beat Switzerland’s Joel Gaspoz, the leader after the first leg, to win the event with an aggregate time of 2 minutes 05.87 seconds.

The race jury overruled the protest by the Swiss coaches after viewing videotapes.

The giant slalom was the first men’s race of the four-day World Series, a prelude before the European leg of the World Cup kicks off Sunday with a men’s slalom at Sestriere.
