Japan Plans Early Drop in Wine Tariff

TOKYO — Japan will cut its tariff on imported wine next April, one year earlier than planned, to help ease friction with its trade partners, especially the United States and the European Community, a Foreign Ministry official said Thursday.
The government said in July that the tariff would be cut from 38% to 30.4% as part of measures aimed at boosting imports and cutting Japan’s huge trade surplus.
