HONOLULU — The Manulani sailed into Honolulu Harbor before dawn today, carrying 285 refrigerated containers packed with Christmas trees that soon will turn sections of shopping center parking lots into evergreen forests.
For the 1 million residents in these tropical islands, the arrival of the Christmas tree ship serves as the annual signal that the Yuletide is here.
As soon as state agriculture inspectors check each container for possible insect pests, particularly the dreaded gypsy moth, the 170,000 trees will be released to retailers.
