Jordan Premier Briefs Assad on Peace Effort

DAMASCUS, Syria — Jordanian Prime Minister Zaid Rifai arrived Sunday to brief Syrian President Hafez Assad on the latest efforts to revive the Mideast peace process, Arab political sources said.
Rifai also invited Assad to visit Amman, they said. Jordan’s King Hussein visited Damascus last December to seal a rapprochement between the two countries.
The official Syrian news agency SANA said that Sunday’s talks, which were not announced in advance, concerned “recent developments in the Middle East” but gave no details.
Hussein’s recent negotiations with Yasser Arafat ended in discord last week when the Palestine Liberation Organization chairman left Amman.
