Reagan Policy in South Africa
Once again President Reagan has chosen the correct and courageous course at considerable political risk to himself.
Sanctions against South Africa would simply encourage the Marxist African National Congress, whose terrorist activities have escalated in response to foreign interference, and retrench the government of Pieter W. Botha, which has recently shown a sincere willingness to institute reforms.
South Africa is a staunch pillar of the West’s defense against communism. Without access to its vital sea lanes and strategic minerals we might well be deprived of the option of a military response against Soviet aggression.
Any attempt to destabilize the Botha government of such an irreplaceable ally is tantamount to abetting our own downfall.
