A retired Air Force colonel and one passenger were killed and four other passengers were seriously injured when their single-engine light airplane crashed and burned in the Sierra Nevada near Tioga Pass at the eastern entrance to Yosemite National Park. Park rangers were able to reach the crash site, which was at the 10,400-foot level, within half an hour of impact to rescue the survivors and keep the fire from spreading. Dead at the scene were pilot David C. Feiler, 43, of Paradise, in Butte County, and passenger Thomas J. Nutting of South San Francisco.
