Imprisoned federal Judge Harry E. Claiborne, facing possible removal from office, wants to stand trial before the full Senate rather than a committee of 12 senators, his lawyer said. Claiborne, 69, who has refused to quit the bench or stop collecting his $78,700 annual salary while serving a two-year sentence for tax evasion, was impeached last week by the House. Federal judges are appointed for life and can only be removed by Congress after impeachment by the House and a trial in the Senate.
