Coroner Says Woman Died of Head Injuries, Stab Wounds

SAN BERNARDINO — A woman whose dismembered corpse was found sealed in plastic bags died of head injuries and multiple stab wounds to her chest, the county coroner said Monday.
Coroner Brian McCormick said preliminary findings in an autopsy show that Mary Ann Evans, 40, died of a beating and stabbing at least two days before her body was found Thursday.
After Ms. Evans died, her body was cut up and wrapped in plastic bags that were placed in a freezer. Her torso was found stuffed in a garbage can and, because it was not frozen, provided the most evidence about the cause of death, McCormick said.
James David Noffsinger, 42, who lived with Ms. Evans, was being held in County Jail after his arrest Friday in Chico on suspicion of murder.
San Bernardino County Sheriff Floyd Tidwell said last week that Noffsinger “is being fully cooperative and is no doubt solely responsible in the death” of Ms. Evans.
