Watson Fired as Katella Coach

Richard Watson, football coach at Katella High School the past three seasons, has been fired by Principal Barry Escoe.
“Basically, we wanted to look for a new coach to possibly get a program that’s more competitive,” Escoe said. “It was my final decision based on the recommendation of my athletic director.”
The Knights were 3-7, their 17th straight losing season. Only 29 players were on the varsity team.
Watson, who was 7-23 in three seasons, will remain at the school as a physical education instructor. Escoe said he would begin accepting applications for the coaching job next month and hoped to have a coach selected in the spring.
