Police arrested a paroled sex offender in connection with the attempted rape of a Stanford University graduate student on campus. Abel E. Adams, 29, of Fairfield, was booked on a charge of assault with intent to commit rape in an attack on the 27-year-old woman, police said. The woman said she was walking near the Stanford Arboretum when a man wearing a ski mask forced her into nearby bushes. She said she fought off the attacker, escaped and hailed a passing motorist for help. Adams was arrested a few hours later, investigators said, when he returned to a car parked near where the woman was attacked. Police said they found a ski mask in his pocket.
