A federal appeals court, reviving a decade-old lawsuit against the State Department, ruled that a lower court erroneously rejected sex-discrimination claims by 1,000 women foreign service officers. The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously ruled that U.S. District Judge John Lewis Smith “committed a number of legal errors and made several clearly erroneous errors of fact” in his 1985 opinion rejecting claims that women foreign service officers were victims of discrimination in hiring, assignments and promotions.
