Surely, Drugs and Gangs Can’t Destroy Manual Arts
- Share via
As a former football player at Dorsey High School, I can well remember how gang activities did menace our sports program. Some kids were lured into gangs and drug-dealing. The money and the fast life had more appeal than packing the pigskin or packing a book.
However, these individuals never succeeded in destroying our sports teams. The reason: They were not the majority of students. Most kids were not gang members, did not deal drugs.
Unfortunately, The Times does not talk about these kids. Not one of the coaches, teachers or administrators quoted points to the positive achievements of athletes and students who stay in school, study hard and graduate.
The impression your series leaves is that all blacks and Hispanics are only interested in quick money and violence. I think it’s past time to call a halt to this sort of stereotyped reporting.
