A reputed gang member has pleaded not guilty to the fatal shooting Jan. 30 of a woman on a busy Westwood Village street in Los Angeles. At his arraignment in Santa Monica Municipal Court, Durrel DeWitt Collins, 21, insisted he was framed. He is charged with the murder of Karen Toshima, 27, of Long Beach, shot in the head when fighting broke out among rival gangs. He also was charged with attempted murder for trying to shoot another reputed gang member, Tyrone Swain, who authorities said was the intended target when Toshima was mortally wounded.
