Acting Arizona Gov. Rose Mofford’s call for reinstating a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday drew a partisan reaction from legislators, with Republicans expressing opposition. One of impeached Gov. Evan Mecham’s first moves after taking office last year was to rescind former Gov. Bruce Babbitt’s order for a holiday honoring the slain civil rights leader, to be observed by all executive branch workers. Mofford, like Babbitt, is a Democrat. Mecham is a Republican. Meanwhile, the Arizona Senate scheduled an impeachment trial for Feb. 22 for Mecham.
