PASSENGER COUNT AT JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT : An Increase for the Year, But the Recent Trend Is Down
- Share via
The number of passengers flying in and out of John Wayne Airport in 1987 increased by 12.2% over the previous year, but the passenger count has steadily decreased during the six months ending in January.
Total passenger traffic at the airport fell from 436,430 in August, 1987, to 325,447 in January. Although December and January are traditionally slower months for air travel, the latest counts for those months are significantly below the same months a year earlier.
Alan Murphy, airport assistant manager, said he could not give a reason for the decline in passenger traffic.
Airport spokesman Shawn Arena said the number of passengers served in January, 1988, was 325,447, compared to 346,798 for the same month in 1987, a 6.2% decline.
Last December, 326,562 passengers were served by the airport, 4.9% fewer than in December, 1986, Arena said.
John Wayne Airport is served by nine commercial airlines and five commuter carriers, which together average about 90 flights a day.
