A police union has sued Police Chief Daryl F. Gates, contending that he illegally transferred 13 traffic officers in retaliation for their signing affidavits contending that the Police Department has an illegal ticket quota.
The Superior Court suit filed Monday by the Los Angeles Police Protection League seeks a court order requiring that the department allow the officers to return to their previous assignments, if they wish.
The suit names as defendants the city, Gates and Harry Kozak, captain of the Central Traffic Division. The union already has filed a complaint over the transfers with the Employee Relations Board, the suit said.
