The World : Hanoi Yields U.S. Remains
Vietnam turned over to U.S. officials what are believed to be the remains of 17 American servicemen missing since the Vietnam War. Vietnam also provided written reports on three other missing Americans, said Lt. Col. Paul Mather, leader of the U.S. military team that received the remains at Hanoi’s airport. The remains in metal caskets were loaded aboard a C-141 transport for the flight to Hawaii, where they will be analyzed by the Army Central Identification Laboratory to see whether they belong to any of the nearly 1,800 Americans listed as missing in Vietnam. The return was the largest in two years and the fourth largest since the Vietnam War ended in 1975.
