Following are capsule reviews of today’s screenings in the American Film Institute Los Angeles International Film Festival at the Cineplex Odeon Century Plaza Cinemas:
‘Tribute to the National Film Board of Canada: Academy Award Winning Animated Films’
Canada, 87 minutes
6:25 p.m.
The first program in a two-part survey of NFB animation, with an emphasis on humorous films, including three of the board’s four Oscar winners: “Sand Castle,” Co Hoedeman’s elegiac portrait of a doomed fantasy world; “Special Delivery,” a freewheeling black comedy by John Weldon and Eunice Macaulay, and “Every Child,” Derrick Lamb’s and Eugene Federenko’s satire on the way contemporary society treats children. (The fourth, Norman McLaren’s seminal “Neighbors,” is included in one of the documentary shows.) RECOMMENDED, although many of these films screened at the recent Los Angeles Animation Celebration.
