Council Expands No-Smoking Rule

The Los Angeles City Council voted Friday to expand the city’s no-smoking ordinance to private auditoriums and meeting rooms where public business is conducted.
The council voted 11 to 0 to approve the ordinance that will outlaw smoking during public meetings in private buildings.
“What we did was to close a gap in the existing law so that it will be illegal to smoke in any place where public business is being conducted,” Councilwoman Ruth Galanter said.
The earlier law had applied only to publicly owned buildings.
Some public agencies occasionally meet in private buildings, such as the Women’s Club in Van Nuys, which is used by the Planning Commission.
