Trio of Valley-Area Cyclists Named to U. S. National Teams

Three Valley-area cyclists have been selected to the men’s and women’s United States Cycling Federation world championship distance teams.

John Tomac of Chatsworth and David Brinton of North Hollywood were chosen to ride in a series of men’s road races in England from May 29 through June 10. Tomac and Brinton were among a group of 12 riders divided into two road teams, the second of which will compete in the Tour de Trump along the East Coast on May 5-14.

Maureen Manley of Thousand Oaks was selected to ride for the women’s time trial long team.

Mission College’s baseball game against Compton at Valley College on Friday was postponed when neither umpire showed up. The game will be played Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Bluebird Field in Sun Valley.

Cal State Northridge has signed two more athletes to letters of intent.

Matt Anderson, a left-handed pitcher from Buena High, will play for the baseball team. Jerry Miller, a 5-foot-7 midfielder from Hart High, will join the soccer team. Miller was a first-team All-Foothill League selection last season.

Sarah Quarles led Calabasas High to the championship of the Interscholastic Equestrian League in the school’s second year of membership in the 32-team league of Southland schools.

Quarles, a junior, was the top point-producer in the league with 170 points.

Saugus Speedway tonight will feature NASCAR Sportsman, Mini Stock, and Street Stock oval and figure 8 races.

The program begins at 7 with trophy dashes, heat races and semi-main events. Gates open at 4, time trials begin at 5.
