Going, Going, But Not Quite Gone: A masterpiece by Italian Renaissance artist Antonello has been withdrawn from sale by auctioneers at Christie’s in London because the final bid fell short of $6.8 million. No agreement could be reached for the sale when a top bid of $6.1 million was offered for Antonello’s 15th-Century painting “Christ at the Column.” The picture, part of a collection amassed by the late Sir Francis Cook, was considered the most important Italian Old Master to appear at auction since Mantegna’s “Adoration of the Magi” landed a record $13.7 million at Christie’s in 1985.
