Paul Hewitt, a San Diego State running back who wasn’t selected in the National Football League’s draft, signed a one-year free-agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys Monday night, according to his agent, David Kessler.
Hewitt rushed for 1,104 yards on 240 carries last season and led the nation in scoring in 1987 with 24 touchdowns. Included in the contract, Kessler said, was a signing bonus and a bonus if Hewitt makes the team’s final roster.
Hewitt (5-feet-9, 195 pounds) will attend the Cowboys’ orientation minicamp starting Friday.
