Two Orange County elementary schoolteachers were awarded the Sallie Mae Awards from the Assn. of School Administrators in Arlington, Va. The awards are given to first-year teachers.
The awards went to Frances M. Coad at Dr. Jonas E. Salk Elementary School in Anaheim, and Lorrie Giles at Las Lomas Elementary School in La Habra. The two began their teaching careers during the 1988-89 school year.
There were 100 winners nationwide and seven from California. Teachers were nominated by their superintendents or other school administrators, and then had to submit essays that were judged by a panel from the higher education community, said Linda Klopfenstein, awards coordinator at the association.
The contest, in its fifth year, is sponsored by the Student Loan Marketing Assn., known as Sallie Mae.
“They put up the money for the awards and pay us to administer it,” Klopfenstein said.
