Rio Mesa 24, Camarillo 20--Rio Mesa scored 10 points during a 2:15 span late in the fourth quarter to give the Spartans (1-1) the win at Camarillo. Matt Zarit’s 25-yard field goal with 4:30 to play broke a 14-14 tie. The clinching field goal was set up by Charles Thompson’s blocked punt and recovery at the Rio Mesa 49 with 9:51 left. The Spartans drove 43 yards to the Scorpion eight before Zarit kicked the field goal.
Rio Mesa took a 24-14 lead with 2:20 left on quarterback Henry Wilson’s one-yard run. Wilson completed seven of 17 passes for 73 yards.
Camarillo quarterback Corey Tucker, who completed four of 11 passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns, hit Mitch King for a 43-yard touchdown on the game’s final play.
Brian Vellemure of Camarillo led all rushers with 82 yards in 10 carries and a touchdown.
