CS Long Beach’s Oates, Ryan Combine to Lead 49ers Past Boise State, 17-14

BOISE, Ida. — Paul Oates passed to flanker Kelly Ryan for two first-half touchdown passes Saturday night and Cal State Long Beach shut down Boise State in a scoreless second half as the 49ers edged the Broncos, 17-14, in a nonconference game.
Oates and Ryan connected on a 10-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and an 11-yard touchdown pass in the second period. Rick Schwendinger kicked a 31-yard field goal as Long Beach (2-1) took a 3-0 lead.
The loss dropped Boise State, ranked 12th in Division 1-AA, to 1-1.
The Broncos were led by sophomore tailback Chris Thomas, who rushed for two touchdowns and 103 yards in the first half, but Long Beach’s defense dominated Boise after halftime.
