Ten Welsh soccer fans were given 16-month prison sentences after being found guilty of a drunken rampage through an Athens suburb after their team lost a match.
The supporters of the Welsh Swansea soccer club were still wearing the torn and bloodied clothes from their night of brawling when a three-judge court handed down the sentences.
The court said the fans could buy off their sentences at $2.35 a day, or almost $1,240 for the full sentence. Four other accused Swansea supporters were freed by the court.
The Greek public prosecutor said the drunken fans wrecked a restaurant, two bars and five cars during a rampage through the luxury seaside suburb of Glyfada near Athens.
Each Swansea supporter was given a chance to defend himself before the court and all said they were innocent and had been attacked by a Greek mob.
Adrian Evans, 31, who was convicted, said: “We are not British hooligans. Swansea fans have the best reputation in Britain for good behavior.”
