Four outrigger canoes racing on stormy San Francisco Bay were swamped by a big wave near the old Alcatraz prison and 25 people were pitched into the icy bay, but all were rescued, officials said. Eighteen people were pulled from the choppy bay by the crews of two other vessels and six Coast Guard boats rescued seven others, the Coast Guard said. Several people suffered hypothermia, or loss of body heat, but no serious injuries were reported, the Coast Guard said. One person was reported missing but was later found, a Coast Guard spokesman said. The big wave swept in under the Golden Gate and swamped the outriggers during a race near the island site of the infamous 1930s federal prison known as “The Rock.”
