AMMAN, Jordan — Prime Minister Sharif Zayed Shaker, following King Hussein’s instructions, ordered the release Saturday of 48 political detainees, including members of a Palestinian group linked to a rocket attack on Israel, a government official said.
The official said that among those ordered released were 12 members of the Marxist Palestinian group, George Habash’s Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. They were arrested in October for involvement in the Sept. 7 rocket attack on neighboring Israel from Jordanian territory.
The other 36 detainees were members of leftist groups who were detained in recent months for security reasons, the official said, but did not elaborate.
