Christina Adams broke the San Diego Section record for free throws made in a game as Grossmont High School defeated Serra, 59-48, in an El Cajon/Santana Tournament girls’ basketball game Saturday.
Adams, a junior guard, made 28 of 34 free throw attempts and scored 49 points. The previous record for free throws in a game was 17, held by three girls and all set in 1989: Suzie O’Brien (San Marcos), Monica Filer (Point Loma) and Marcey Wolf (Chula Vista).
Adams added nine field goals--three three-pointers. And in the believe-it-or-not department, Grossmont Coach Frank Foggiano wasn’t particularly impressed.
“No, she didn’t have a very good game to be honest,” he said. “She missed some shots she usually makes.”
Point Loma Tournament
Rancho Buena Vista 71, San Diego 43--Skiy Burton had 22 points, Dotty Feeney 15 and Shawana Edge 12 for RBV (1-0).
Boys’ Basketball
Hilltop Tournament
Hilltop 80, Mira Mesa 66--Carlos Gonzales led host Hilltop with 19 points, Carlos Marquez added 15 and Josh Wenning and Mike McGrath had 10 points each in a game marred by 56 fouls. Hilltop (2-0) has started the season with some hot shooting: On Friday, the Lancers made 11 three-point field goals against La Jolla to break the San Diego Section record. The previous record was eight three-pointers in a game, set by University of San Diego High School against St. Augustine last season.
University City-San Diego Tournament
University City 93, Mar Vista 45--Ray Hooper’s 25 points led the Centurions at San Diego High. UC outscored Mar Vista in the first quarter, 21-3, and led at the half, 46-21. Tim Page (15) and Tim O’Neal (13) paced the Mariners. Crawford 75, Castle Park 41--Terry Halton scored 33 points to lead Crawford (2-1), and Marc Carter added 11 points and 16 rebounds.
San Diego 73, Escondido 40--Clark James did a little of everything against the Cougars: He had 33 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had two steals and three blocks for the Cavers.
Torrey Pines Tip-Off Tournament
Championship
Torrey Pines 80, El Capitan 40--Five players scored in double figures as the Falcons (5-0) won their tournament for the fourth consecutive year at Torrey Pines. Bart Brandenberg led all scorers with 16 points for Torrey Pines.
