New York Jet General Manager Dick Steinberg was to meet with Joe Walton today to discuss the seven-year coach’s future.
It is expected Steinberg--hired last Monday as the Jets’ first general manager in 12 years--will fire Walton, who compiled a 54-59-1 record (including 1-2 in playoff games).
Pittsburgh Steeler defensive coordinator Rod Rust, USC’s Larry Smith and Illinois’ John Mackovic all have been rumored for the Jets’ job.
Smith has denied he would be interested in any pro football coaching job. He has been rumored as a candidate for several NFL coaching jobs, the last being Phoenix.
