WORLD : Egypt-Syria Relations Resumed

DAMASCUS, Syria — Egypt and Syria said in a joint communique today that they have resumed full diplomatic relations, ending a decade-old rift.
The communique was issued after a two-hour meeting in Damascus between Syrian President Hafez Assad and Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Sedki.
It said the two countries decided to renew relations in the light of “current international developments and their expected impact on the Arab nation.”
Sedki was the most senior Egyptian leader to visit Syria since 1979 when Damascus led most Arab countries in breaking ties with Cairo because of its peace treaty with Israel.
The announcement left Libya the only Arab state which has not restored full relations with Egypt.
