WASHINGTON — Barbara Bush had a small cancerous cell removed from her upper lip today, her press office announced today.
“No side effects or subsequent difficulties are expected,” it said in announcing the operation.
She underwent the outpatient procedure at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland on Wednesday.
Mrs. Bush was in New York today, visiting All Children’s House, a day-care center for homeless children and other youths.
In a one-paragraph statement, her press office said:
“At Bethesda Naval Hospital on Feb. 14, Mrs. Bush underwent a routine outpatient medical procedure to remove a small basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer, from her upper lip. The procedure was performed under local anesthesia by Bethesda’s chief of dermatology, Dr. Harry Parlette.”
A deputy press secretary said the cancer was discovered a week ago.
Mrs. Bush recently underwent radiation treatment for a persistent eye problem stemming from a condition known as Graves disease, which had also affected her thyroid.
