An Oxnard bicyclist was in guarded condition Friday after he was struck by the blown front tire of a passing car, a nurse in the intensive care unit at Ventura County Medical Center said.
Edward DeVries, 26, suffered serious injuries to his arm, the California Highway Partrol said. The full extent of his injuries was not known.
DeVries was riding west in the bike lane on Gonzales Road west of Patterson Road at the western edge of Oxnard when Bernardino Ventura, 33, also of Oxnard, passed him heading east in his car at 40 m.ph.h. Ventura’s left front tire blew off the car, flew across the road and struck DeVries, the CHP said.
The accident is still under investigation.
