A 25-year-old Chula Vista man killed himself by tying a nylon rope 20 feet up a 50-foot high-tension electric tower and hanging himself, Chula Vista police said.
John Joseph Greer of the 100 block of Tamarindo Way in Chula Vista was found at 11 a.m. Monday. The metal tower was on San Diego Gas & Electric property on Orange Avenue, about a five-minute walk from Greer’s house, Detective John Heggestuen said.
After the hanging, Heggestuen said, the rope broke, dropping the body to the ground, where it was spotted by a passer-by who called police.
Greer had been under psychiatric care in the past, his family told police.
