The SIDELINES : Radja Opts for Italy Over Boston

BOSTON — Dino Radja, the 6-foot-11 Yugoslavian forward-center the Boston Celtics thought was going to play for them next season, reportedly has agreed to play instead for the Italian team Il Messaggero.
The Celtics had signed Radja to a multiyear contract, but the Boston Globe said today it was told by unidentified sources that he came to terms with Il Messaggero in the last three days. The Globe said it could not find out the length of the reported contract or much about it and wasn’t able to reach Celtics General Manager Jan Volk immediately.
The Celtics have been involved in a six-week fight to prevent guard Brian Shaw from playing for the same Italian team.
The Celtics and Jugoplastika Split, Radja’s club team in Yugoslavia, reached an agreement last fall under which Radja would play in Yugoslavia last season and join the Celtics for the upcoming season.
