NEW YORK — The NBA salary cap, the maximum that teams can spend on player salaries, jumped more than $2 million today to nearly $12 million.
For the 1990-91 season, the cap will be $11,871,000, an increase from last season’s $9,802,000.
In addition, the minimum salary that teams are required to spend was raised to $9,610,000, up from last season’s $7,935,000.
The amounts of the salary cap and minimum team salaries are set each July 31 on the basis of formulas set forth in the contract between the league and the Players Assn.
The new cap and minimum applies to all teams except Minnesota and Orlando, which joined the NBA last season. For those teams, the cap will $8,903,000 and the minimum $7,208,000, three-quarters the amount of the other teams.
