THE SIDELINES : China Spikes U.S. in Volleyball

BEIJING — China trounced the United States, and the Soviet Union beat Cuba today in the semifinals of the 11th World Women’s Volleyball Championships.
China is a five-time defending world champion, and the Soviets are the Olympic champions. They play for the title Saturday.
China defeated the United States, 15-7, 15-8, 15-7, and the Soviets downed Cuba, 17-15, 15-7, 15-8.
China, led by veteran star Lang Ping, blanked the United States in only one hour, as the Americans gave up 15 points on mistakes.
The United States will play Cuba on Saturday for third place.
