Mark Bavaro, the New York Giants’ starting tight end, will undergo an unusual surgical procedure to replace a dead bone in his left knee with a bone from a cadaver.

The New York Times reported that if the surgery is successful, the rehabilitation period could last three to six months. The paper, quoting sources with knowledge of Bavaro’s condition, avascular necrosis, said it’s hoped that the new bone will provide a framework allowing Bavaro’s own bone to grow and create new cells.
