American Express Co.: The financial services company reported a $254-million profit in the first quarter, contrasted with a loss of $620 million in the 1990 quarter. Revenue was up 8% to $6.3 billion. The New York firm said a major reason for its return to profitability was a $39-million profit at its Shearson investment banking unit, which suffered an $883-million loss in the quarter a year ago.
