WORLD IN BRIEF : NORWAY : Hunting of Whales Called Off for 1991

The Norwegian government says it will not hunt any whales this year. The year will thus be the first “since the 16th Century that Norway hasn’t killed any whales, and I am happy for that,” said Bjoern Oekern of the Greenpeace environmental group. The International Whaling Commission has banned Norway and other countries from commercial whale hunting but allowed them to kill a few whales each year for “scientific purposes.”
