H. J. Heinz Agrees to Buy JL Foods: Heinz said it agreed to purchase JL Foods, a major food industry supplier, for $500 million as part of its continuing efforts to take a bigger bite of the prepared food market. The transaction with John Labatt Ltd. of Canada will make Heinz one of the biggest North American suppliers of processed foods to the restaurant and fast-food business, with an estimated combined total of $1.4 billion in annual sales, according to a Heinz spokesman. JL Foods is based in Eugene, Ore.
