Leland Sparks Won’t Enroll This Fall at Washington State

Leland Sparks, a defensive back from Mater Dei High School, has not met the NCAA’s Proposition 48 requirements and will not attend Washington State this fall, according to Jim Zeches, an assistant coach for the Cougars.
Sparks, who missed the final five games of the 1990 season because of a knee injury, failed to score 700 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test, Zeches said Thursday. Sparks will take the test again this fall and is expected to enroll in school in January, Zeches said.
“This actually works out better, because Leland’s knee wasn’t 100%,” Zeches said. “He probably would have redshirted anyway. This gives him a chance to get healthy and not lose a year of eligibility.”
