Spanish-Language Health Network Goes on Market

To reach more Orange County Latinos, two Santa Ana hospitals began marketing a Spanish-language physician network and health care membership program this week that will refer Spanish-speaking patients to physicians fluent in Spanish.
The hospitals--Doctors Hospital of Santa Ana and Santa Ana Hospital Medical Center--hope to provide non-English-speaking Latinos easier access to health care through a program called Nuestra Familia Medica, which means Our Medical Family. The hospitals, however, provide services only to those who have medical insurance.
A spokesman for the hospitals’ parent, Burbank-based Summit Health Ltd., said the program will provide free transportation between a member’s home and the hospitals. The hospitals, where about half of current patients are Latinos, have 18 Spanish-speaking doctors who can perform general surgery. Some of the doctors also specialize in obstetrics, gynecology, urology and internal medicine.
The new program joins a growing list of patient referral services in Southern California that target non-English-speakers with employer-provided health insurance. One such service is Salud y Familia, which offers members in Los Angeles and Orange counties 20% discount in medical billings and 10% off prescription drugs.
