Residents Warned of Thefts From Mailboxes

LOS ALAMITOS — Police are cautioning residents not to leave mail--especially any containing checks--clipped to mailboxes for pickup.
In the past three weeks, checks have been stolen from about a dozen residents in apartment complexes in the area bounded by Green and Howard avenues, Sgt. Ron Lesovsky said.
“Citizens have reported their outgoing mail was left in plain view and was never noticed as missing until canceled checks were returned from the bank,” he said.
The checks had been “altered to show an individual as payee instead of a company,” Lesovsky said.
Police do not know how many checks were forged or the loss amount, Lesovsky said.
