Pasadena : Taxicab Vote Delayed

The City Council on Tuesday put off consideration of a measure to expand taxicab competition after a lawyer for the two cab companies that now hold licenses in the city objected.
Representatives of the BTC and CTS Cab Companies, which operate in the city as Checker Cab, Pasadena Taxi, Yellow Cab and Red Top Cab, had not been consulted by city officials before the measure was drawn up, attorney Neil J. Barker said.
Owners of the two companies, brothers Masood and Mahmood Babaeian, contend that they are already burdened by stiff competition from shuttle and limousine services, which are not regulated by the city.
Amir Imankhan of the Yellow Top Cab Co., which operates in five other San Gabriel Valley cities, argued for deregulation of taxis. “If it’s tough, let it be tough for everybody,” he said.
City staff members who prepared the measure said it would improve cab service in the city. The council will take up the measure again Sept. 24.
